    Air Suspension Systems

AirTop  by Al-Ko is a supplementary air assist suspension system which works in conjunction with the leaf springs on your motorhome's back axle to take all the harshness out of the suspension and bring an end to worries about ride quality and stability , restoring your ride height to what it should be. It makes even the longest journey a pleasure, not a toil.

AirTop has been developed by Al-Ko specifically for Fiat,Peugeot, Citroen, Volkswagen and Mercedes motorhome chassis.

If you already have a towbar or want Armitage's to fabricate and fit one for you, an air assist suspension system is the ideal way of getting the most out of your motorhome in safety and comfort.

Air ride suspension systems fitted by Armitage's can be inflated and deflated from inside the cab through a dual piped gauge with Schrader valve.
Airbag suspension allows you to enhance the rear suspension of the vehicle by adjusting the air pressure in the bags. This reduces any sagging at the rear that is caused by incorrect loading or overloading and maintains a level ride height for the vehicle.
Drivers who have had air assisting suspension systems (sometimes known as semi-air) fitted have reported significant improvements in their vehicles' ride and handling when travelling on the motorway. It has greatly improved the straight line stability in strong winds and when being overtaken by heavy vehicles.
And it helps to decrease your motorhome's body roll when entering roundabouts and cornering, as well as greatly improving the vehicle's road manners overall.

Conversion can also prevent grounding out on awkward driveways and steep slopes or when embarking on ferries. Whatever the situation the pressure can be altered to suit your own preference or need.
Motorhomes, suitable for air assist suspension that are based on leaf sprung chassis include: ACE motorhomes, Autocruise, Auto-sleepers, Auto-trail, Bessacarr, Compass, Elddis, Lunar, Murvi, Nu Venture Campers, Orian, Swift, Timberland, Adria, Benimar, Burstner, Chausson, CI Motorhomes, Dethleffs, Eura Mobil, Geist, Hobby, Hymer, Kentucky, Knaus, La Finca, La Strada, Laika, LMC, Maesss, McLouis, Mobilvetta, Niesman and Bischoff, Pilote, Rapido, Rimor, Rollerteam, SeA, Tec, Trigano.

This list is by no means exhaustive but gives an indication of the types of motorhomes that air ride suspension systems are suitable for. Air assist suspension for motorhomes with Al-Ko chassis are dealt with in the next column.

    Air  Assist Suspension Systems

AL-KO's Airtop additional air ride suspension system comes in two types.

One is designed to be fitted on motorhomes (and other vehicles) that have been built onto Fiat Ducato, Peugeot, Boxer and Citroen Relay ladder chassis. This costs £459 inc vat and fitting is £70.

Here it is in place on a new Fiat chassis.

The other AirTop kit is made specifically for vehicles built on the current Mercedes Sprinter or VW Crafter chassis and this costs £499. This kit does not need a spacer kit and can be fitted for £70.

Al-Ko kits use dual air gauges and pressure can be adjusted independently on each side.

Neither of these Al-Ko kits are designed to fit motorhomes that have been built on vehicles whose original chassis have been replaced by an Al-Ko chassis.

Air assist solutions

We have turned to DUNLOP, one of the world's great names, for extensive range of auxiliary air assist suspension solutions for motorhomes built on Al-Ko chassis (click here to see what the system looks like in place).

We are pleased to be able to offer Dunlop Systems and Components suspension solutions for vehicles fitted with an AL-KO galvanised steel chassis ( from 1994, including those with TAG axles).

One of the big advantages of the Dunlop Alko kits is the short installation time, basically there is no need to disassemble the drum or disk brakes. This makes an installation time of around 2 hours or less. Fitting costs of air  ride suspension is £168 including VAT for one axle and £264 for twin axles . This fitting price includes the cost of fitting the basic gauge kit. Add £40 to have the compressor kit fitted.

TAG AXLE AL-KO CHASSIS

If your motorhome has a twin rear axle configuration then it's simply a matter of fitting an air ride suspension kit on each axle to achieve huge stability and ride quality gains. There are drawings at the bottom of this column to help you choose the system which is right for your chassis.

ALMOST ANY OTHER MOTORHOME AND MANY LIGHT COMMERCIALS

And when it comes to finding the ideal air assist suspension kit for scores of different base vehicles we have added Firestone as well as Dunlop to our catalogue. This means that if there is an air-assist suspension kit out there for your vehicle, we will be able to supply and fit it. The list is far too long to give here. Please give us a call or drop us an e-mail and we will happily talk through the options.  GAUGES AND COMPRESSORS

We offer gauges and compressors to compliment both ranges (you can see the Dunlop sets -AT £325 PLUS £40 FITTING - at the bottom of this column). The Firestone gauge kit is the same price as the Dunlop but Firetsone offer three types of compressor.

Standard, at £263 plus £40 fitting. This set pumps up both sides at the same time and then you adjust by letting one side down.

Super, at £326 plus £40 fitting. This set, which has a larger capacity compressor, allows you to inflate each side separately.

Self-levelling, at £686 plus £80 fitting. This is a fit and forget system. You tell the "brain" what ride height you want and it will automatically adjust the air suspension to accommodate the load you have on board. Unfortunately, this system cannot be used to give extra height for ferry ramps and steep drives.

Kits for vehicles with Al-Ko chassis are available as follows, but please be aware that motorhome builders have a tendency to use up all their stock chassis before moving onto the new ones, so these dates can be elastic.
